Swim Lesson Classes we offer:

Parent/Child (ages 6 mos. – 3 years, or extremely fearful older children): This class will introduce the child to the water through songs, games, and beginner skills. A LARGE focus is also placed on water safety skills at this age. Repetitive motion is vital at this age. A parent or guardian must accompany the child and children MUST wear swim diapers. Parents are permitted on deck during this class.

Preschool (ages 3-5): This class will introduce your child to swimming skills based on their current ability. A heavy focus will be placed on body position to allow for the child to be able to progress, breathing and and being able to submerge their face, and back floating - as well as rolling onto their back independently, as these skills are crucial to basic survival swimming. We strive to push your child to succeed while understanding that sometimes that includes overcoming fears. Once your child is acclimated to class, parents are asked to watch from the balcony to prevent distractions.

Upper PreK (ages 4-6): This class will introduce your child to swimming skills based on their current ability.

School Age (7 and Up): From beginner to advanced, your child will be placed in an appropriate grouping. Strong focus will be on relaxation in the water, because the ability to hold themselves up relies heavily on the ability to relax. Back floating, glides and pushoffs, and basic techniques will be taught. Parents are asked to remain in the balcony for this class.

Intro to Competitive Swimming (Must have basic skills): Swimmers will swim widths (and occasional lengths) to practice more efficient techniques and gain endurance in the water. They will be introduced to the competitive strokes, and will also be introduced to starts and turns.

REMINDER - During winter weather, if West Mifflin Area School District CLOSES school OR cancels EVENING activities, the pool will also be closed!!! In the event that this affects swim lessons, they will always be made up.

SWIM TEAM INFORMATION

West Mifflin proudly sponsors both a middle school (JV) and high school (Varsity) swimming program for students in 7th through 12th grades.

Our middle school team competes in September and October every year, and our varsity season runs November through February, plus WPIAL and PIAA Championships (for those qualifying) and various off season opportunities.

From 2011-2014 West Mifflin was represented at PIAA Championships each year and was represented again in 2016 and 2023, and boasts a back-to-back WPIAL Champion in the Boys' 100 Yard Butterfly for 2013 and 2014, as well as a 2014 WPIAL Champion in the 100 back! Brad also went on to finish second in the state of Pennsylvania in the 100 fly in 2014! Brad is now a Westminster University graduate where he swam all 4 years (still a Titan!), as so many of our athletes go on to represent us at the collegiate level.

The Girls' Team was also the 2015-2016 Section Champions, making them back-to-back-to-back-to-back (4-PEAT!) section champs that year!!

AS PER DISTRICT POLICY WE STILL DO NOT ACCOMMODATE POOL PARTIES.
Please contact pool manager Laura Dolton for any other information concerning our aquatics program.  She may be reached at [email protected].
