The Technology Department is an integral part of the day to day operations of the West Mifflin Area School District.  The IT department services and supports all other District departments in planning, implementing and supporting various uses of technology.  In order to operate in the most cost effective manner, the Technology Department constantly analyzes district processes and procedures.

Recently Completed Technology Department Projects

  • Implemented a 1:1 laptop program for grades 9-12
  • Implemented a Learning Management System for grades 6-12
  • Added over 300 new laptops in 4 buildings (grades K-5) in preparation for the iReady Reading and Math assessments and remediation program
  • Renovated the wireless infrastructure across the district with a large help from ERATE
  • Increased Internet bandwidth to 400mbps - 1gbps Internet 2 service
  • Increased WLAN bandwidth to 10gbps (inter-building connections)
  • Migrated on-premise Exchange server to the cloud (Office 365)
  • Implemented an iPad one-to-one program with the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades
  • Provided every district desktop and laptop with MS Office 2016 through an educational program with Microsoft
    • Office 365 offers web-based MS Office applications and 1TB of online storage
    • All staff and students qualify for a copy of to be used on a home computer via their Office 365 account
  • Created local broadcast cable channel with collaboration with the high school technology ed. dept.
  • Created a Technology Integration Coordinator position
  • Installed a redundant Internet connection to increase online resource reliability
  • Updated the District's Technology Plan for the next three years - 2016-2019
  • Replaced aging district network switches
  • Upgraded WAN (multi-building) connection to 10gb fiber
  • Reduced reliance on traditional desktop computers by introducing a virtual desktop environment

Future Goals of the Technology Department 

  • Continual expansion of district wireless infrastructure
  • Update interactive classroom technology
  • Increase Internet bandwidth to 500mbps
  • Implement district-wide Learning Management System
  • Expand one-to-one program through the high school grades 9-12
