Attendees will have the opportunity to see a presentation on SIE and its impact at New Emerson Elementary. Hands-on classroom activities will take place to give everyone the opportunity to tap into their scientific side and experience what the students are able to learn through the SIE program.
SIE has been approved by the legislature for $13.5 million in 2007-08 and is helping 2,600 teachers bring science to life at an early age for nearly 59,000 students in 121 school districts. Launched by Governor Edward G. Rendell and the Pennsylvania Department of Education in 2006, SIE is designed and coordinated by ASSET (Achieving Student Success through Excellence in Teaching) Inc. ASSET Inc. is a nonprofit education improvement organization in southwestern Pennsylvania with a proven track record of success in improving the teaching and learning of science. West Mifflin Area School District was awarded a grant of $75,000 in materials and professional development for New England Elementary to participate in the program.
