WEST MIFFLIN — Whether you’re a student studying for an upcoming test or a parent looking for guidance while helping with homework, Varsity Tutors is able to assist.
Through a grant, the West Mifflin Area School District and its students have free access to the tutoring network, which provides assistance around the clock — 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, including weekends. The website is available to all district students at all grade levels, K-12.
“It’s an online platform that connects you with real people on the other side in order to help you with whatever problem that you have,” said Director of Special Education Dr. Dayna Sikora. “Even parents can get extra practice in an area.”
West Mifflin families can access Varsity Tutors through the WMASD website,
www.wmasd.org, by going to the students tab, clicking student links, and then logging into Clever.
After creating your Varsity Tutors profile — a process that should only take a few minutes — students/families let the website know what they’re working on, studying for, etc., and the website matches the student with the appropriate tutor.
“Maybe a student can’t figure out an algebra problem. They can log onto Varsity Tutors, and a live tutor will work through that problem with the student at no cost,” Dr. Sikora said.
“Students can even be sitting in study hall, long onto Varsity Tutors, and let’s say their chemistry teacher is at lunch and they need help with a chemistry problem. That student can log onto Varsity Tutors and get assistance with that chemistry problem before they’re done for the school day,” she added.
In addition, the site has interactive study tools, collaborative workspaces, and more.
Beyond tutoring, the site also can evaluate essays and provides SAT/ACT prep, as well as additional enrichment.
“With the way that we’re moving forward in education, having 24/7 tutoring available is very beneficial,” Dr. Sikora said. “It’s here, and it’s available to every single student in the district.”
