Welcome to the Library and Information Science Department of the West Mifflin Area School District!

Our district libraries strive to meet the diverse information needs of all of our students and faculty.  We teach our students to become lifelong learners who are experienced in all aspects of information literacy.  Our curriculum focuses on the Pennsylvania state standards for information literacy and Information Power from the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) and the American Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT).

Our libraries house diverse collections that support the curricula of each building while also supporting the leisure reading needs of our student populations.  Our librarians focus on supporting the curricula, fostering a love of reading, and teaching students to become information literate information consumers. 

Interested in what it means to be information literate?
Below, is a quick list of what information literacy entails...

Information literacy is defined as the ability to:
     Recognize the need for information;
     Identify and locate information sources;
     Evaluate the quality of information obtained; and
     Organize and use information effectively.

The information literate student can effectively:
     Access library resources for a variety of reasons, i.e. to meet 
          individual needs, to complete curriculum-related activities, to carry 
          out independent study and for personal use;
     Develop a search strategy;
     Select appropriate print and electronic sources;
     Analyze the information for relevance, quality, timeliness,
          accuracy, and authority;
     Apply the information appropriately; and
     Evaluate the process and the product.
