On Thursday, May 15, 2008 the West Mifflin Area School District’s Board of School Directors took the important and exciting step necessary to move forward with building a new middle school for our students to be located on the high school campus.
This decision was not made without detailed studies, debate and consultation. The board and administration took into careful consideration the current condition of the middle school, educational needs, the affordablility to the tax payers and the overall community impact.
With the passing of this motion, the building project will next require approval from the Pennsylvania Department of Education. This process may take approximately one year. Preliminary building plans are being reviewed and an advisory committee has been established
to provide feedback to the board and administration throughout the building process. When all required documentation is received from the state, we anticipate that the ground breaking could take place in the summer of 2009.
This is a historic time for the district and this building program will provide our middle school students with a learning environment conducive to academic success. By opening this new school, we will be able to expand our neighborhood elementary schools; allowing for more classrooms and pre-k programs at each elementary location.
The long-term financial impact of this project will benefit the community through increased property values, a decrease in transportation costs, the creation of available prime property to increase our tax base and the draw of young families to a district with state-of-the-art facilities and progressive academic programs.
